Daily WordPress Prompt: Less Stuff, More Peace

Daily writing prompt
Where can you reduce clutter in your life?

Around my house!

I’ll get straight to the point, my house is a disaster at the moment. And to be frank, the new year has brought some new solutions into my life, one being de-cluttering my home and closet. So this question came at an opportune time.

I’ve vowed to myself that I want to live more simply, to get rid of things and clothing I haven’t touched in over a year or more. And to stop taking family members hammy downs that they no longer want or need. It’s adding to the clutter in my home and just driving me bonkers.

So my plan of attack, take on one room at a time, starting in my kitchen. It needs to be done and the kitchen is the space I utilize every day, all day and it’s become chaos. Next is the spare room, mostly the closet. Then my daughter’s room, our master bedroom and then the rest of the house. I’m even going to go through the Christmas and Halloween decorations.

I feel like living more simply and less with things and stuff. I’m over it and I’m over the consumerism that comes along with it all. I’m done being part of that trap.

Wish me luck on this de-cluttering journey, I’m going to need it!

I hope you have a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world!

A Gentle Question for Fellow Parents

Hey guys!

This is going to be a short post, but I’m sitting here just thinking about stuff that’s been going on lately. And thought I’d ask this question to all of you.

When you are unwell or even feeling a bit motivated, do you feel bad you haven’t accomplished things throughout your day? Or played with your children like you usually do?

I always feel absolutely terrible and I continuously apologize to my husband and daughter. However, my husband constantly tells me I’m unwell I need to rest not be doing every little thing. But, I still feel guilty. Is that normal?

Please give me your thoughts in the comments and I hope you had a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world!

One of Those Gentle Days

Evening everyone! I apologize for not posting yesterday, but I’ve been struggling for a bit lately and feeling under the weather for a bit. I saw the doctor and we are running some tests to check a few things. I’m not overly concerned, so please don’t worry about me! But a little health update for you there. And I will do my best to post every day, it’s definitely one of my goals this year.

Onward with the post!

Today, I went out bright and early to find a storage unit for rent with my mom, and thankfully we found one. It’s close by and indoor, which means climate controlled. THANK GOODNESS! Because that’s exactly what I was looking for. I will give you that little update probably in about a month or so. I got home within an hour which I was thrilled that we got that done so quickly.

When I got home, we fed Valeria breakfast which she didn’t have much of an appetite. Not really surprised since she was tossing and turning most the night and she is very much like me where she has little to no appetite the next morning when we don’t sleep. We opted to start going to our favourite butcher again at our local weekend market on the other side of town. I really missed the high-quality of his meat products and he’s reasonably priced. We hadn’t seen there in over a year, but if you what’s happened in 2025, then you understand why. He instantly recognized us and it was so nice to chat with him.

We did promise Valeria could have a surprise and she opened for a steak and onion sausage roll from the stall that the butcher’s daughters owned. Guess we did something right. That place is littered with sweet/baked good stalls and she opts for meat. That’s our girl! After we got her a roll, which was not big by the way, we stopped at the sourdough stall to grab a few loaves and a focaccia and then we were done.

We headed home, Valeria had her little sausage roll for lunch and some focaccia, which was rosemary and sea salt. Oh many, I had some as well and it hit the spot! She went down for a nap after her tummy settled and she had a wonderful nap.

We also made some baked apple fritters, which I was testing ANOTHER recipe because I can’t do fried food, but miss apple fritters every so often. I didn’t glaze this batch, but it turned out really well to be honest, so if I make these again I’ll lightly glaze them, but they were perfectly sweet on their own. If you guys are interested, please let me know!

Anthony made some burgers on the bbq even though it started to snow here, but it was perfect. The rest of the night was pretty quiet, lots of play time, bath time and nightly routine.

That’s just a glimpse into our Saturday and I hope you had a great Saturday yourself!

Have a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world!

Recipe – Ground Beef, Cheddar & Caramelized Onion Quiche

Evening lads and ladies! I hope you had an incredible day, mine was pretty busy to be honest. But I will be diving into a new recipe I attempted today. So I’ll skip the chatter until the end. Should I do a recipe card? Hmm may have to ponder that thought a little further, sorry ranting, here it it!

Quiche Recipe:

  • 2 pie crusts
  • 7-8 eggs
  • 3 cups lactose-free milk (you can use regular milk or even cream, whole milk is ideal but frankly use what you have on hand!)
  • 1 1/2 – 2 cups lactose-free cheddar cheese (again, use regular cheddar or even swap for whatever your fav cheese is!)
  • 1 – 1 1/2 cups caramelized onions (you want no moisture, so a nice golden brown)
  • 1 – 1 1/2 cups cooked ground beef (nicely browned and drained well)
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • garlic powder to tase
  • thyme to taste – for egg mixture
  • Italian seasoning to taste – for meat
  • onion powder to taste

Instructions:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 Degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Blind-bake your crusts (store bought to homemade) for about 8 – 10 minutes for a crisp bottom. Don’t forget to poke holes with your fork in the crust!
  • Slice your onions and throw into a hot pan with a touch of oil. Cook until a nice deep brown in colour.
  • Next, cook the ground beef until nice brown colour (crispy bits are a bonus in my opinion!) Drain your meat before seasoning. Once drained season your meat, I used salt, black pepper, Italian seasoning, garlic powder and onion powder.
  • Crack your eggs into a bowl, whisk them together before adding your milk, salt, black pepper, time and a dash of garlic powder.
  • Shred your cheese
  • Divide beef, onions and cheese evenly between the two crusts.
  • Pour egg mixture evenly over both.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes, until center is just set with a gentle jiggle.
  • Rest at least 10-15 minutes before eating.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Instead of taking the beef out of the pan and draining, take a paper towel with your spatula and just swoosh it around the pan to soak up all the grease. I promise it won’t burn up in there is you move quickly.
  • Ingredients are interchangeable. I basically took ingredients I had on hand to make this, you don’t need to go out of your way to get specific ingredients. Just don’t put added moisture into a quiche (ie. Tomatoes, etc)
  • Seasonings are also interchangeable. Use what you and your family enjoy!
  • Layer your ingredients in the crust. I found that putting a layer of beef, then onion, then cheese worked really well and kept the crust crispy.
  • This would be lovely with a light salad or some veggies.
  • Pie crusts can be store-bought or made, I had store-bought on hand that I thawed out in the fridge. Homemade is always best though in my opinion, but life gets busy.

Now that I got that out of the way, let’s chat a bit. I love quiche, but to be completely honest this is the first time I’ve actually made one. For my first time, it came out really nicely. I made the 2nd pie for my parents and brother, which they really enjoyed.

Now it wasn’t perfect, I spilled some of my egg mixture into the baking pan I had set the pies in and I had a little overflow with the pies, but the flavor was there and that’s what mattered.

Let me know if you try this and if you made any substitutions. I’d love to try your versions.

I hope you have a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world!

Books Valeria Loves (and We Read on Repeat)

Hello and welcome back to my ramblings, I’m your host for the evening. Tonight I’ll be discussing a few books that my little book worm has been really into lately. I thought about writing about this today as my daughter and I were cuddled up on the couch reading some books. It’s something I enjoy doing with her and can read to her pretty much all day.

Sounds weird, but I’ve been reading to my daughter since before she could even understand the words. She looked looking at the photos, but I also thought it might help with her speaking. I don’t know if that actually helped or not. However, she definitely has my love of books!

First up is Albert in the Alley and this one we came across by accident. We had went to a book store in Hamilton because I was looking for a certain puzzle and the author of the book was actually there doing signings. She saw us with Valeria and pulled me aside and started speaking with me. She let me know it was loosely based on real life events and that proceeds go to the SPCA in Hamilton/Burlington area. She was such a sweet young woman, seemed a bit shy but extremely friendly. She signed the book for Valeria and also gave her a colouring page and sticker that matches the book. I was thrilled to support a local author.

It’s a really sweet story and the art work is incredible. I highly recommend that if you can find this, definitely get it for your kiddos or if you have friends or family with kids. I promise they will love it!

This is such a fun book, It Bears Repeating is such a beautifully well done children’s book that allows you to experience the Inuit language along with the art. The author and artist have done an incredible job of including their indigenous background with fun for kids. I totally butcher the language, even though the pronunciations are on the title page inside the book, I do try. Valeria absolutely loves it, from the language to the art style. I highly recommend and we were fortunate to receive this one through the Dolly Parton Imaginary Library Program. I will be keeping an eye out for more children books from Tanya Tagaq.

I’m not entirely sure how we came across this one to be honest. She gets books from everyone, so I believe this one came from one of our family members. Nevertheless, it’s such a precious book. The author does a wonderful job diving into the imagination of a child as he dreams, but also shows the care and thought of the mother as she navigates the child’s fear of sleep. It’s amazingly written and the art style is absolutely whimsical and a style I’m not to familiar with but I love. Valeria wants to read this day or night and she loves when we get to the dream section of the book. Highly recommend if you can get your hands on it!

Valeria is obsessed with all three of these books and each one has a wonderful story, a whimsy and sweetness to them. I’m so glad these are part of our little library because she gets so excited when we pull them off the shelf to read.

Hope you enjoyed and if you do end up getting any of these, please tell me what you think in the comments!

I hope you have a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world!

A Sweet Bedtime Moment I Didn’t Expect

Welcome, welcome friends!

I was going to write a blog post regarding some of Valeria’s favourite books recently, but I opted to go in a different direction because of something I witnessed on the baby camera. I will be posting the book blog tomorrow though!

Tonight my husband and I were in bed watching some The Great Celebrity Bake Off Stand Up to Cancer and we heard Valeria on the monitor. I turn to see her wake up for one moment, crawl to the end of her bed, grab her blank and pull it onto her and then proceeded to cuddle the blanket by her face.

I turn to my husband in shock because she usually HATES blankets. My husband chuckles and goes “Yeah, she’s been doing that the last few nights.” I laugh and respond “She sleeps like me!” He laughs in agreement.

It was honestly one of the cutest night time moments I’ve witnessed in a while for Valeria. I have so many memories of when she was younger, but she usually sleeps like a log these days.

Anyways, that’s my tiny moment I wanted to share to which hit me straight in the heart.

I hope you have a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world!

Daily WordPress Prompt: Sweet, Savory, and Slightly Unhinged – My Current Snack Obsessions

Daily writing prompt
What snack would you eat right now?

It’s funny this prompt came across my desk, metaphorically speaking because there have been two “snacks” that I have been obsessed with lately. I consider them a bit interchangeable between a meal or snack.

BUT….

I’ve been loving this cranberry pumpkin seed sourdough bread with cottage cheese and hot pickled eggplant.

And the other snack is cottage cheese with berries, specifically blackberries.

I’m very much into the sweet/savory combo with my food. It’s not for everyone, I know my husband doesn’t love it, but I definitely do. I suppose my snack choices may be a bit bizarre or even gross to most people, but meh.

Let me know what your snack choice is OR what bizarre snack is your guilty pleasure.

I hope you have a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world!

A Little Glimpse

Buonasera!

Not much to report today, it was a typical Monday for us in our house. My husband was working from home, thankfully he is able to do that for his job.

Valeria was full of energy and just wanted to play nonstop. Though she did take a micro break to watch a little Masha and the Bear with mama, which was nice to have her all cuddled up with me on the couch. I always love cuddling with her and definitely one my favourite moments of the day.

The other moment that I thought was just so incredibly sweet was when she was playing play-doh with my husband. They were making “ice cream” and she made me a little bowl of “strawberry” ice cream with little candies. And then she proceeded to make one for my husband and herself. She wanted us all to have ice cream together. It was such a precious moment and just shows me that she has such a kind heart and soul.

But I just wanted to share a small glimpse of our day.

I hope you have a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world!

Grace in the Quiet: A Sunday of Rest, Soup, and Toddler Love

Evening everyone!

Not much happened today, it was a fairly quiet Sunday for us in the house. I missed watching Mass this morning, so I will be watching that after I’m done posting tonight. If you find that weird, it’s not. It’s difficult to keep a two year old occupied in a church for the duration of service and we are fortunate enough to be a part of a church that records it for those who can’t make it in. Wonderful I think!

But I was feeling a bit under the weather today, my chest has been feeling this heaviness as if I have a chest cold and I’ve been coughing a bit. I kept my distance as best as I could from my little one, but you try explaining that to a toddler. She didn’t quite get it and kept wanting hugs and snuggles while simultaneously asking “Mommy happy now?” She does that every time I’m not feeling well.

Another day where my husband picked up the slack and I did what I could. I did however let Valeria choose dinner and she opted for soup. I forged what I could in the fridge/pantry; carrots, celery, tomato, onion, garlic, broth, a few baby potatoes and spaghetti I broke up into pastina size noodles. It’s all I had, cut me some slack! The soup turned out good and I had some left over pizza dough, so I made mini panzerotti as well. Why not right?

I enjoyed the day, Valeria seemed really happy and full of energy especially after her nap. Even though the night ended a bit difficult, Valeria did not want to go to bed, it still was a pretty great day.

Hope you had a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world!
