Ever hear a song or remember one, just hearing it brings back so many memories and just pure nostalgia?
Well, that happened to me this evening. I sat down at my computer and I got this overwhelming feeling to look up a band I haven’t listened to since high school.
Now, I don’t want to hear any judgment, my musical taste is pretty eclectic to be fair. But this one was a bit of a “dirty secret” in a sense. It was a band that my best friend and I were OBSESSED with in high school, but we really didn’t talk about it with anyone else. Not really sure why, I guess because they had a bit of a….teen bop stigma attached to them.
Okay, okay I know, enough with the anticipation!
It’s…..Hanson….okay I said it. Yes, we as teenage girls were obsessed with Hanson. The three brothers whose first single was MMMBop. Yeah, them!
In high school, they released the album Underneath, which was incredible! It was kind of their break through album into their adult sound. At least in my opinion. And if I’m not mistaken, their first self produced album.
So, tonight when I looked up Hanson on YouTube it immediately popped up with the song I was thinking about….coincidence? I started listening to ‘Penny & Me’ and the memories of my high school days came flooding back. From late nights studying, sleep overs at my best friends place, warm summer days of being lazy and even our first Hanson concert. Yup, we saw them live in some dingy club in Toronto. It was the best! Those were some of my positive memories of high school that this song just brought flooding back.
These memories put an immediate smile on my face, I still knew every lyric surprisingly and really made me miss my best friend from back then. We used to belt out the lyrics, but the bridge was always the loudest:
‘Cause Penny and me like to roll the windows down
Turn the radio up, push the pedal to the ground
And Penny and me like to gaze at starry skies
Close our eyes, pretend to fly, it’s always Penny and me tonight
We’ve lost touch for many years now, but I often think of the good times we had. Not sure she will ever see this since she has a busy life last I heard, but if she ever does, know that I miss you a lot and wish you all the best in your life.
Isn’t it beautiful when music can capture and hold so many memories?
Ciao!

Beautiful song ! But I love to listen romantic songs of Arijit Singh and Ed Sheeran. The photograph ,” Loving can hurt ” it’s memorable for me

I think it’s not just the music itself that people get attached to, it’s the memories that are connected to them. Like you may first hear a song on a vacation and whenever you hear it after that part of you is remembering how fun the vacation was.βYour best friend from back then probably thinks of you too when she hears Hanson.

Yesssss! music, songs etc tie our memories to people, places, and times π π My “favorite” song always transports me to being a teenager, with my friends at the beach. I lived my whole life in a small beach and fishing community until about 4 years ago. When I hear “that” song it am right back there. Thank you for sharing this and stirring emotions! π

Oh I’m so glad it brought back happy memories for you as well. It sounds like it was a wonderful place to live and maybe some day you will move back there. Now I have to ask, what song is it?π

Yes, it is very beautiful. A great place to grow up and raise my son. I didn’t sell my home there yet so maybe we will but I doubt it since my son moved to where we moved. He got a great job so I will stay where he and my grandson are π The song is Don Henley “The Boys of Summer”
