Happy 1st Birthday Valeria!!!

This will be short and sweet.

It was exactly one year ago today that I gave birth to my beautiful baby girl and my husband and I were absolutely blessed. Time has flown by in a flash because honestly, it felt like just yesterday I was coming home with her from the Midwife clinic after birth.

What an absolute world-wind it has been, to watch her grow, learn, struggle, become more beautiful and watching her little personality develop. It has been such a beautiful time. A time filled with all kinds of emotions; excitement, happiness, pride, comforting, and a bit bitter sweet.

All I want to say is Thank you God for blessing us with our beautiful, intelligent little girl and we couldn’t have asked for anything better.

Love you always Bubs (my baby girl) ❤️❤️❤️

Ciao!

P.s. – We did have a party/Thanksgiving and will write about it this week!

Book Review – Drowned

Title: Drowned

Author: Therese Bohman

Genre: Fiction, Thriller

Number of Pages: 217

My Rating: 💋💋💋

Book Summary:

Marina has left behind her stalled relationship and floundering academic career in Stockholm and travels to rural Skåne to visit her sister, Stella. They haven’t seen each other in some time and Stella now lives with a much older, quite famous author, Gabriel. The couple resides in a beautiful old house full of books, gorgeous flowers and, as Marina soon learns, plenty of secrets. Despite herself, Marina becomes more and more enthralled by the enigmatic and unpredictable Gabriel even as she becomes convinced that something isn’t right about her sister’s new love.

Set in the idyllic countryside during a fleeting Swedish summer and autumn, nothing is as it seems in this spellbinding novel of psychological suspense. Combining hothouse sensuality with ice-cold fear on every page, Drowned heralds the emergence of a major new talent on the international scene.

My Thoughts:

I was sucked into the novel almost instantly, reading the first 50 or so pages with ease. The story was intriguing from the start; the sisterly dynamic, the mysterious famous boyfriend, the loss of interest Marina was battling with her academics and all wrapped up in the beautiful country side in Sweden. How could you not be enthralled?

As the book progressed, though I was still reading with ease, but it started to dwindle my interest slightly. The best way I could describe it is, if you’ve ever watched a tea kettle begin to boil and then you pull it off the burner before it begins to whistle. It’s mildly disappointing when you get to the peak and it just….stops.

I won’t spoil anything but the relationship dynamics were interesting, somewhat realistic to a degree, especially that of Stella and Marina and of Stella and Gabriel. You never really know what’s occurring in a romantic relationship behind closed doors. But the story took a turn for the boring and frankly, almost abusive in the second act. The mystery of Stella wasn’t fully solved and it only hinted, strongly, that Gabriel had a hand in it. But you kind of have to make your own conclusions and assumptions about that and his past.

Marina, Stella’s younger sister, who the book’s perspective is set, seems lost in her life. She craves romance, confidence and to be something or someone better. She admired her sister and looked up to her quite a lot. However, it begs the question if she herself wanted to step into her sister’s life and not live her own. Gabriel gladly obliges by giving her the attention she desires.

The descriptions of the scenery, florals and everything in between was spectacular, however the ending was, let’s just say, boring and lack-lustre at best. To me it felt like it was missing something, more substance, but it just ends abruptly.

It was translated from Swedish, so it was kind of funny when I would see grammatical errors, or at least I thought so, but that was rare. If you want a quick read, it’s something to get through in about a day or two, I’m a slow reader though. It’s good for what it was, but I’ll be passing this one along.

FYI, I shelved Magic Lessons by Alice Hoffman for the time being. I was struggling with the writing style, but enjoy the story. I just needed a break.

Up next is The Manor House by Gilly Macmillan!

Hope you enjoyed the review!

October Goals

Well it’s Monday and it’s time to write, and this is a little past due, so let’s jump into it.

  • VALERIA’S FIRST BIRTHDAY!!
  • Take Valeria’s 12 month photos
  • 1 year check-up with the doctor
  • Update Valeria’s baby book
  • Go through and print some photos for picture frames
  • Get a birthday gift for my sister-in-law
  • Buy everything for Thanksgiving and cook
  • Order Halloween costumes
  • Decorate for Halloween
  • Watch all the spooky, scary Halloween movies
  • Clean; living room, hallway, bathroom, bedroom, dining room chairs
  • Continue at least two walks a day
  • Get blood work done
  • Tidy up my desk
  • Pack things we aren’t using in a tote bin
  • Order tea light candles
  • Sort out my important paperwork and file them
  • Visit my cousin
  • Book review
  • Catch up on blogs

So I have to admit, a few of these are already accomplished, but everything is always a work in progress right? It should be a great month, lots of celebration around Valeria and my sister-in-law, who is turning 40.

Plus a bonus of Halloween, which we will be celebrating in Hamilton this year with my husband’s family. It will be an incredible time and I have a feeling Valeria will love it and because she can’t eat the candy yet, my husband has kindly offered to take it off her hands! Good thing she doesn’t understand the concept of Trick or Treating yet.

All in all, this month will be just as busy as the last, so I will keep you posted!

Have a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world.

A Loss

On September 27th, I had to make the very hard decision to put my cat Salem down to rest. It was something I had anticipated, but not quite so soon since I had nursed her back to health many times this year. But I think she felt it too. I won’t divulge too much, but my mental well being has been…not so great.

With us being away so much these past two months, it seems that it may have stressed her more than I realized having me away from her. I came back in September to find her frail, weak and not doing well at all. She seemed to perk up a bit after a few days of having us home, but I knew she wasn’t well.

That Friday, I took her to the veterinarian only to find out she has been battling either Cancer or Kidney disease. It broke my heart to make that decision, but I knew that if I kept her alive and suffering, it would have been selfish of me. Now as I write this, I’m tearing up; something that often happens at least once a day since.

I was a mess and thankfully Valeria isn’t old enough to understand or have to explain why she is no longer here. However, she now calls her black cat stuffy “Sa’em” and so we refer to her cat as Salem now. Often cuddling with it and pretty much taking it everywhere with her.

She was a beautiful cat and I have no many memories of my time with her and right now that’s what I have to remember. Though I must admit, I don’t have the heart to deal with getting rid of her things just yet, it’s still too hard. I also am having a hard time going to get her paw print from the veterinarian’s office, though I really should this week.

I also had to put on a really brave face for my husband’s birthday with his family the following day after that happened, which was hard. I was so numb and no one knew and I intended to keep it that way. I didn’t want to ruin his special day.

Nevertheless, the loss is a great one and I feel it every day, but I hold on to the love and wonderful memories I have of her. Just as I do my other cat Paige. I hope they are somewhere wonderful together.

Ciao

September Recap

I know I usually do this on the first or second of each month, but things have been a little bit hectic and so here is the recap for September.

Here was my list:

  • Clean
  • Continue at least two walks a day
  • Continue counting calories
  • Increase my water intake to two 40 oz tumblers a day, at least
  • Get blood work done
  • Tidy up my desk
  • Pack things we aren’t using in a tote bin
  • Order tea light candles
  • Clean up the living room
  • Finish up a few art projects
  • Blog about: my family reunion, Anthony’s Dad’s visit, the wedding, house sitting, our visit to my cousin’s cottage
  • August book review
  • Order Anthony’s Birthday gift and plan out his birthday
  • Begin planning for Valeria’s birthday in October
  • Start my next novel
  • House sit for Anthony’s sister and her husband

Well 6 out of 16 isn’t too bad to be fair, it could have been much worse! But I’m going to re-arrange a few things and start my list from scratch, including a few necessary self-care items.

The few fall craft projects I had to do were completed and a great success, especially my cousin’s wreath I had made for her and a hodge podge cyclops mummy head. Still need to order those candles which will be done today.

Anthony’s family events were great and house sitting was a nice glimpse into what it would be like when we have our own home. His birthday was also a success, having ended up with two little birthday celebrations.

Valeria’s birthday is all set in motion, I’ve gotten all the decorations (minus the balloons), cake is ordered and since it falls on Canadian Thanksgiving, she will be enjoying her first ever turkey feast cooked by mommy. It should be a great time and pictures to come!

The Perfect Neighbours book review is out, if you haven’t read it please take a peek and I started a new novel, however I’m struggling a bit with the writing style, so I’m debating starting a new book and shelving this one for the time being. I’ll let ya know.

Otherwise, September was a busy month for us and October doesn’t seem to be letting up any time soon. Will keep you posted.
