Book Review: Silence for the Dead

Title: Silence for the Dead

Author: Simone St. James

Genre: Historical Fiction, Mystery, Horror, Paranormal, Fiction

Number of Pages: 363

My Rating: πŸ’‹πŸ’‹πŸ’‹πŸ’‹πŸ’‹

Book Summary:

In 1919, Kitty Weekes, pretty, resourceful, and on the run, falsifies her background to obtain a nursing position at Portis House, a remote, once magnificent estate turned hospital for soldiers left shell-shocked by the horrors of the Great War. Hiding the shame of their mental instability, the patients suffer from nervous attacks and tormenting dreams. But something more is going on at Portis House – its plaster is crumbling, its plumbing makes eerie noises, and strange breaths of cold air waft through the empty rooms. And why do the patients share the same nightmare, one so horrific that they dare not speak of it?

Kitty finds a dangerous ally in Jack Yates, an inmate who might be a war hero, a madman…or maybe both. But even as Kitty and Jack create a secret, intimate alliance to uncover the truth, disturbing revelations suggest the presence of powerful spectral forces. And when a medical catastrophe leaves them even more isolated, they must battle the menace on their own, caught in the heart of a mystery that could destroy them both.

My Thoughts:

I’m a sucker for books based on early medical practices, hospitals and mental asylums so this one immediately caught my eye on bookoutlet.ca. I was worried it was going to be an extremely slow burn, but the pace was steady. Though if you aren’t into a little romance mixed into your haunting, I’d skip this one. It may not be for you.

An old, decaying mansion converted into a medical facility, known as Portis House, for soldiers suffering from shell-shock and other mental maladies from the war. The perfect atmosphere to set a spooky ghost story. However, this story is filled with not only a mystery and haunting, but a story of self-discovery, friendship and a little bit of romance.

You quickly learn that Kitty is running from her past, falsifying her resume as a nurse to acquire a job at Portis House. However, the head nurse and her boss, quickly calls her out on her deception but keeps her due to the sheer fact the facility is understaffed and desperate for nurses. She basically has to learn hands on and quickly.

Kitty discovers immediately that this isn’t the easiest line of work and she is tested both physically and mentally on a daily basis. But her will is strong and her personality stubborn, she does gain some allies in other staff members and even some of the patients. Her main ally being Jack Yates, or patient 16, his identity being kept secret from the other patients until Kitty decides she just needs to know. Discovering the war hero and becoming enamored with one another as they begin to unfold the evil that is plaguing the patients and the mystery of Portis House.

The growth of the characters, especially Kitty, was nicely done and the stead unraveling of the mystery that surrounds Portis House was intriguing. I loved the subtle twists and turns, the pieces of the puzzle falling into place nicely. And I personally liked that Kitty and Jack got a bit of a happy ending.

All in all I give this book five Baci due to the historical setting, the gothic mystery and who doesn’t like a ghost story set in an old, decaying mansion turned medical facility. Wonderful story-line and cast of characters, would definitely recommend and one I’ll be keeping on my shelf. I’ll definitely be reading more from author Simone St. James!

I’m currently reading Ghost Camera by Darcy Coates.

Hope you enjoyed and keep an eye out for the next review!

Making Waves at Two: Our Under the Sea Celebration – Happy Birthday Valeria!

First off I want to say a very BIG

How the time has flown by, you are two already and it has been such a wonderful and blessed ride with you thus far. Watching you learning, growing and discovering who you are and that incredible little personality forming, I can’t tell you what a proud mama I am. You have brought me so much love and light, even in the darkest of times. I love you baby girl and wishing you all the joy and happiness this year and beyond!!

Now please indulge me as I go over her wonderful birthday party that was held this weekend in the company of our family. We unfortunately couldn’t celebrate with my husband’s side, so she will be getting another party this weekend coming to celebrate with them, which we are very excited about.

Nevertheless, she had a wonderful time, adored the decorations/food and got to be the center of attention all day long (even though she didn’t really want to be). It was wonderful to see the smile on her face as she ate cake and opened her gifts, truly remarkable!

The theme was Under the Sea/Mermaid and when I plan, I go all out. It’s just who I am, plus I want these to be memories she will always remember. So weeks of planning, prepping and crafting all lead up to this….

Personalized Banner from Grandma
I made this on Friday night, decorated my mom’s place on Saturday night, cute right?!
Waaaaaaaaay too much food….not my idea just FYI, but all delicious! My husband the BBQ Master that day
I just thought that was funny…Made the signs in Canva
Jellyfish pull apart cheese bread made with puff pastry, a ton of cheese and herb butter….woke up early to make that one!
Fish bone pull apart Nutella bread made with puff pastry and Nutella….another one I woke up early to do that day
Sand dollar sugar cookies and sugar cookies in the shape of sea creatures (those were frosted later)…I’m not a baker, don’t judge my burnt cookies….okay judge a little..
Valeria helping mama unsafely cut the first piece of her birthday cake….yup birthday girl has to cut the first piece, tradition for us.
Her candle – since you couldn’t see it
The design on her cake, which you couldn’t see in the photo. I designed this with AI and then tweaked it to what I wanted. It turned out great!
Her dress and gifts!
She is obsessed with this tea set! I had to stop taking pictures because she needed help with opening gifts, but she got a lot. Everyone was very generous. Thank you to everyone!!! β™₯
Anthony and I created a book specifically for Valeria. YEEEES….I used AI to help with the idea, but again I tweaked it to make it our own. A gift for her birthday
We used AI for the images….I’m artistic, but I ain’t THAT artistic. We had it printed through Canva as a hardcover book.

So there you have it folks! An absolutely incredible day for little Miss Valeria! I’m glad you could come on this photo journey with me….apologies for all the little captions. She was a lucky little girl and spoiled rotten to say the least, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Showered with love and gifts….not to mention A TON of food.

Hopefully one day, I’ll show her all the photos from the day and hopefully it makes her smile.

Wishing you a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world!

Ciao from a very blessed mama!

Mermaids, Mini Manicures, and Endless To-Dos

I don’t know where this month is going, but it’s flying by far too quickly. Valeria’s birthday is FAST approaching and I feel like I’ve been planning forever with no progress in sight!

It’s going to be an Under the Sea/Mermaid theme and of course I will be going all out. I’ve got table clothes, hanging decorations, balloons, plates/cups, homemade craft decorations, etc. I mean you get the gist. I have to order her cake this Friday, which HOPEFULLY they can do what I want on-top of the cake. It’s going to be a very simple cake to be fair. I wonder if I should get a plan cake top and put on cake decorations myself…hmm…

Valeria was a great little helper with these, very eager. The hand print crafts are my fav….her tiny hand crab!

Sorry my mind drifted in thought there, been happening a lot lately.

Not only is Valeria the main event this weekend, but we are also pairing it with Thanksgiving, but the party is all her. Though to be honest, I probably would have skipped Thanksgiving dinner and instead had homemade pizza and appetizers. However, people still want to have a big turkey dinner, SO I will be cooking all day on Sunday. I have some baking to do on Saturday and cleaning but hopefully I can get it all done.

I’ll create a whole post for her birthday party don’t worry!

I did get my nails done for the party last weekend and when Valeria saw them, well she wanted to have her nails painted to match. I happily obliged.

Though I will have to redo the nail polish for Valeria before her birthday party. It’s the kid friendly, non-toxic and basically comes off with water. It’s amazing and highly recommend Piggy Paint if any parent is interested. Pretty quick drying as well if you do it in thinner layers. We currently have black and blue, but I’m hoping to purchase more of them for her in the future.

To chalk up my week, most of the time has been spent planning for the party this weekend and also Potty Training.

IT HAS BEGUN!

I will however do a separate post all about our potty training adventure. Let’s just say…could be worse.

I’m going to end it here because I’m cold and want to burrito myself in my blanket while re-watching the Netflix adult cartoon Haunted Hotel. I’m such a kid at heart.

I hope you have a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world!

Ciao!!

Book Review: The Midnight Feast

Title: The Midnight Feast

Author: Lucy Foley

Genre: Fiction, Mystery, Thriller

Number of Pages: 350

My Rating: πŸ’‹πŸ’‹πŸ’‹πŸ’‹πŸ’‹

Book Summary:

It’s the opening night of The Manor, and no expense, small or large, has been spared. The infinity pool sparkles; crystal pouches for guests’ healing have been placed in the seaside cottages and Woodland Hutches; the “Manor Mule” cocktail (grapefruit, ginger, vodka, and a dash of CBD oil) is being poured with a heavy hand. Everyone is wearing linen.

And yet, just outside The Manor’s immaculately kept grounds, an ancient forest bristles with secrets. The local community resents what they see as The Manor’s intrusion into the local woods and attempts to privatize the beach, and small skirmishes have erupted in the edges of the property between locals and the staff. And the whispers keep coming, about an old piece of pagan folklore – it must be folklore? – the Night Birds, an avenging force that can be called upon to make right wrongs that elude the law. Though surely everything at The Manor has been done aboveboard.

On the Sunday morning of opening weekend, the local police are called. There’s been a fire. A body’s been discovered. Something’s not right with the guests. What happened on the grounds of the Manor the past thirty-six hours? And who – or what – is the cause?

Everyone has an agenda. Everyone has a past. But not everyone will survive…The Midnight Feast.

My Thoughts:

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and really couldn’t put it down. I was a bit hesitant at first, I generally try to stay away from books that are extremely hyped up, but a few chapters in and I was hooked. The multi-perspectives was intriguing to me and I truly can’t remember the last time I read a novel quite like this one. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.

The story follows the perspectives: Francesca – the founder, Owen – the husband, Bella – the mysterious guest, Eddie – the kitchen help and DI Walker – detective. It seems overwhelming, but frankly it was a beautiful and delicate dance between all the characters’ perspectives that was skillfully done.

The story begins on the grand opening weekend at The Manor, a luxury retreat for the rich, famous and influential. Francesca is the owner and creator of this extravagant establishment, along with help from her husband Owen, which you quickly learn was her Coastal family home which was owned by her grandparents.

Guests are wined and dined with no expense spared, but the stress of it all begins to cause small cracks in Francesca’s perfect facade that she presents to the world. Then her true colours slowly begin to spill out and secrets slowly emerge.

Mysterious guest, Bella, is determined to confront and right the wrong of the tragedy that she endured 15-years prior at that very home. Meanwhile, local farm boy Eddie take a job at the Manor and is caught between the locals wanting retribution against Francesca and the Manor and his job at the Manor. Not to mention dealing with his dysfunctional family.

The eerie woods loom over the resort with the feeling that they harbour dark and ominous secrets within them. And the local lore certainly doesn’t help, or does it? The woods play a pretty significant role in this story throughout, which I actually love. And the raven like “ancients” known as The Birds…enough said.

I really liked the flow of the story and development of each character. The chapters aren’t overly lengthy, almost like short little snippets into each characters life, history and connections – not to mention their deep dark secrets.

I also really appreciated the diary entries that were included, taking us back in time to the teenage years and the summer spent at the property, which was 15-years prior. It helps to unfold the lies, secrets and horrific events that transpired and just made me, personally, feel a bit nostalgic of my own teenage years writing in my diary. Please… don’t even lie, we all had one! Though, mine wasn’t that dark…just saying.

With each turn of the page, another puzzle piece fell into place and it kept you wanting more. You had to know what was going to happen on the night of the solstice celebration also known as the Midnight Feast. Chaos, deaths, terrorized guests, and a burning Manor leads to a myriad of questions and the gradual unravelling of the nagging mystery dancing around throughout the book.

There are definitely twists and turns and I really don’t want to give much more away. However, the surprises really do make you go “WHAT!? NO WAY!”

So needless to say, highly recommend this one to be tossed on your TBR list. Amazing atmosphere, story, character development and non-stop twists. I have no doubts that you will truly enjoy this thriller mystery.

Plus who doesn’t like ominous woods and local legends? *Winks*

Hope you enjoyed and keep an eye out for the next review.
