From Center Stage to Lullabies: A Voice I Never Lost

Daily writing prompt
Have you ever performed on stage or given a speech?

Sorry for the delay on this one, but it was in my drafts and I really wanted to answer it anyway!

Actually yes, I used to perform all the time when I was a young kid. I would be in choir and I was the youngest person to grab a lead role in our school play, I was in grade 6. While everyone else was in grades 7-8.

I was very different when I was a kid, I was more extroverted and absolutely loved to sing. The earliest and most famous story of me performing on stage was when I was 5, my mom had taken me to a big Italian bridal shower (during the early 90’s, those were still at least a 100+ people…yup you read that right), and the bride had left the microphone on the stage. I apparently just walked up there, picked up the mic and began to sing “A Whole New World” from Aladdin and the whole crowd went completely quiet and the applause was super loud once I had finished the song. My mom, still to this day, recounts that story proudly.

I did love it, but as I got older and things happened (bullying), I stepped away from my love of singing and performing. Now, I just sing to my daughter or in the shower, more of a private crowd but still makes me feel good.

Hope you have a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world!

Word Press Prompt – A Cozy Moment of ‘Me Time’… Featuring My Vacuum

Daily writing prompt
If you didn’t need sleep, what would you do with all the extra time?

I would love to say something clever and witty and be like ‘Oh I’d learn a new hobby’ or something like that but the truth….

Seriously you want the honest truth? You got it!

I’d clean the house spotless and then just keep it nice, tidy and completely up-kept for the rest of the time until it it needs another deep clean. I’m a busy mom with a tornado of a toddler, love her but trying to wrangler her with my husband makes it a bit difficult to do my daily/weekly cleaning sometimes. So, my house tends to be untidy with toys splayed in every room, laundry needing to be done or even put away, vacuuming, etc. Life right?

But it’s the honest truth, I’d clean. Plain and boring.

Hope you have a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world!

Word Press Prompt – Beach Bones, Mountain Heart

Daily writing prompt
Beach or mountains? Which do you prefer? Why?

I haven’t done a prompt in a while and this one seemed interesting. So, let’s dive in shall we!

In my younger years, I would have said the Beach. I could live at the beach; especially if it was by the sea with the salt water blowing on my face, the sun beaming it’s warmth on my skin, the sand between my toes and the sound of the waves was just pure tranquility. Not to mention I was literally a fish out of water, I could spend the whole day in and out of the water with minor breaks for food and drinks. Finding shells, rocks, sea glass, driftwood and even sometimes bones while I walked along the sand was a treat. My daughter has taken my spirit for the beach instead these days and it makes me yearn for a beach vacation on her behalf.

However, since my late 20’s and into my 30’s, I find the mountains and forest to be more of a serene and peaceful environment for me now. Hiking is my number one favourite thing to do and I wish I could do it more often, but unfortunately I currently live in a city where I am surrounded by a concrete jungle. Ideally, I’d love to move more north to be a bit more within nature. Though living within it would be even better! The calmness it brings is incredible, stepping away from technology and the fast pace of life to just enjoy your surrounds (the mountains, trees, plants, animals, etc) is magnificent. There is just something so special to me about it. It truly does calm me completely; mind, body and soul.

Maybe one day, I’ll live among nature with my family, but for now I’ll enjoy it whenever I can get to it.

Hope you have a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world!

Blockbuster Nights, Slap Bracelets & Slow Days

I can wholeheartedly say I remember life before the internet. I was born at the end of 89′ and though I was itty bitty in the early 90’s, I do recall what it was like before we got Internet in our house.

We would be outside all day long playing with our friends in the neighbourhood, collecting Disney VHS, beanie babies, pogs, crazy bones, playing with polly pockets, Tamagotchi and everyone had a furbie. We all had those make your own bracelet books, where you’d make them out of the colourful string and slap bracelets were ALL the rage! We, for whatever reason, all wore neon or crazy coloured clothing, white washed “mom” jeans, chunky shoes, and scrunchies/ butterfly clips were cooler than you could imagine. Oh but don’t forget the plastic stretchy chokers! We would drink from the hose, get crazy unique candy from the corner store (Chocolate cigarettes or Bazooka bubblegum anyone?), played hop-scotch, jumped rope, tag and hide-n-seek (those were especially fun at “night”). Our parents would call us in for dinner but we would be right back out afterwards, and only come inside once the street lights came on.

If you went to someone’s home, you would have to use their landline phone to call home. NOPE, it wasn’t cordless and you couldn’t take it outside. And you had to memorize the most important numbers to you, home or especially your parent’s work number. And Friday nights were sacred because that meant you either went to Blockbuster or Jumbo Video (which was a Canadian video rental store) and the best part about Jumbo Video was the copious amounts of free popcorn they had. Yup, you can browse and munch on little baggies of popcorn from their popcorn maker. Let’s not forget we also had TGIF and Saturday morning Cartoons, let’s just say our weekends were set!

Honestly, before we got a legit computer and Internet in the house, it was a lot simpler. A phone was a tool when you had good or bad news to share, inform a friend you would be over soon or when relatives sadly passed away, it was a phone call, not a text or link to the obituary. You used colourful pens and paper to to make notes, lists or do your homework and research was done with books…..from a library! Ahhhhh the horror! Maps were paper and you had to have multiple ones in the car to map out your route to wherever you were going.

Being a latchkey kid was a real thing even when I was a kid, but we were taught about stranger danger, to be aware of our surroundings and common sense. Parents had to work! And don’t worry, my brothers only left me on the porch by myself after school a TON of times. But we all knew everyone in the neighbourhood, so I would just go to my next-door neighbours house until one of my parents got home.

I felt like a kid, acted like a kid and was innocent and curious like a kid should be. I wasn’t glued to a screen or worried about someone seeing my post about this or that, or how many followers I had. My idea of a future job wasn’t being an “Influencer” or Youtube sensation. I was just….a plain kid.

So needless to say, I remember life before the internet fondly and this was just a tiny taste of my childhood. I truly miss those simpler days and I hope that I can give my daughter a small taste of what that life was like. Let’s see if we can live a little more like a kid from the good ol’ days, yeah?

Hope you have a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world!

WordPress Prompt – Lead the Quest or Pack the Potions? Your Role Awaits!

I haven’t done one of these in quite some time and this one kind of intrigued me , so I thought I’d answer.

It makes me think of when you play any sort of group video game and each player has their roles; Tank, Healer and DPS (Damage per second). I always played a Healer myself, it’s just the role that suit me best, And even though most people thought it was a support class, and to a degree it IS, it also has the aspects of a leader. Without a Healer, the Tank and DPS can’t really proceed. A Healer holds all the cards in a sense, your life is in their hands.

For myself, I feel like because I fit that role so easily, I’d say that I’m a bit of a leader and a follower. In certain aspects of life I’ve let others take the reigns, especially if it’s something out of my scope of comfortability and knowledge. Allow those who could leader properly to do so; this usually occurred during group projects, especially while I was working. Playing the support role was just better for me in those instances. Plus, public speaking….NO THANKS!

Now you are probably wondering, ‘Okay, but you said you were a bit of both, so where is your leadership side?!’ Good question Ace, let me explain.

I’m a quiet observer on a good day and I don’t tend to speak up often, but when I do… look out! I’m a pretty knowledgeable person, though most people may not think so (the resting bitch face probably doesn’t help!) But my leadership skills stems to my family. I am the one everyone goes to to organize family events, ask for medical advice (I worked in the medical field for a short time), being the support system and confidant, “super” mommy, schedule keeper, appointment maker, trip packing expert, and home chef. I take care of my family and all that accompanies. It may seem silly, but a stay at home mom and the youngest daughter of an Italian family makes you a strong leader. I learned from the best, and woman who run a well oiled household is one of the best types of leaders. Just my opinion though.

So there you have it folks, a little of this and a little of that.

Hope you enjoyed and have a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world!

WordPress Prompt – You Won the Lottery! Now What?

What would you do if you won the lottery?

Ooo this is a great question and if I was on my own the answer would be a bit different. However, I have a husband and kids, so my logical brain kicks in and I think of them first.

First, I wouldn’t want it to be public that I won, I’d want to keep it as quiet as possible. Making it super public brings all kinds of people knocking at the door and who really wants that?

Second, buy a homestead/farm way off in the country. I want my kids to grow up in nature, to be as self-sustaining as possible and really to live farm to table. My husband and I are over city life.

Third, invest money for my kids so they are set for life and never have to worry about money. Also, invest money for my husband and I for our retirements.

Fourth, travel to Italy and Romania because it’s our dream. We want to travel with the kids when they are older so they can learn their different backgrounds/heritage. Plus, I’ve never been to Europe and I really want to see my motherland.

Fifth, I’d help out our close family by giving them some money.

That’s it really. I’m too logical of a person to be fun with lottery money. I wish, but I’d have to play on a regular basis and I don’t. But one can dream! But if you asked my husband, he’s the fun one and would have a very decent car collection and probably his own personal mechanic shop at our new house. I should have had him to write this post!

Hope you enjoyed and have a wonderful day wherever you are in the world!

WordPress Prompt – Heart and Home: Building Bonds Through Family Traditions

Write about a few of your favorite family traditions.

I wanted to write today, and what better than to answer a WordPress prompt and this one just seemed perfect.

I’ve always been one for family traditions and coming from a typical Italian family, we had certain ones we followed every year since we were teeny weeny. But since being in my relationship, my traditions and my husband’s family traditions have had to meld together. Which has, surprisingly, been pretty easy to combine. And it’s been fantastic because now we can pass on the traditions to our kids.

Though, I have to admit, there will be some recipes I need to start learning to keep those food traditions alive, especially from my mother-in-law.

My traditions:

  1. Fish on Christmas Eve – For as long as I can remember, we would never have meat on Christmas Eve. It was always a big fish feast and in Italian culture we have The Feast of the Seven Fishes. As far as I know, we did this in regards to our Catholic upbringing and the tradition still lives on today.
  2. Opening Christmas gifts at Midnight – As kids, we were allowed to stay up on Christmas Eve until midnight so that we could open a few gifts before heading to bed. Then the rest would be opened in the morning. My daughter is only 15 months right now, so this one will be left until she is older.
  3. La Befana – The “Italian Christmas Witch” and she comes to visit January sixth to leave gifts and treats in the stockings that are hung and coal for those who have been naughty. I always loved this tradition as a kid, but it got lost in the holiday fray over time. HOWEVER, I’ve brought it back for my kids, and this was my daughter’s first visit from La Befana. Next year, La Befana will hopefully be revisiting my daughter and her new sibling. I’ve written a whole post about it if anyone is interested! La Befana
  4. Christmas Decorating – Yes, we put up a tree and deck the whole place with Christmas decorations, which my daughter loves the twinkling lights. As the kids get older, they will be able to help decorate more and more. And of course, stockings need to be hung!
  5. Christmas Stories – Every year I try to read a few classics for my daughter; The Grinch, Twas the Night Before Christmas, The Legend of Old Befana, The Legend of the Poinsettia. I’m sure there will be more added over time, but I love reading to her and she loves looking at the pictures as I read.
  6. Cookies for Santa – Yup, you guessed it! We have to leave milk and cookies for Santa, but we can’t forget the reindeer either. I’ve even wood burned a special board specifically for it.
  7. New Year’s Eve – I’ve created a tradition for our little family unit because the holidays are crazy with visiting family on both sides. So, my husband and I started the tradition of just staying in, cooking a really nice meal for ourselves and spending a quiet night in. Just us. It’s one of my favourites because now we get to include our kids in our night and frankly, the quiet alone time is amazing.
  8. Good Friday – Another day where we eat fish due to religious reasons and we still keep this tradition alive today. It’s self explanatory; we have a big feast with pasta, a ton of different fish, vegetables and of course dessert.
  9. Easter Egg hunt – We did this as kids and it was just a fun activity to keep us out of our parents hair for even just a little while. We’ve kept that tradition alive with my nephews and now my kids will be involved as well. This will be my daughter’s second Easter and she will able to understand a bit more about what’s going on.
  10. Halloween – I deck out our house for Halloween because it’s truly one of my favourite holidays. We dress up (I always have some sort of theme or costume idea) and we go out Trick or Treating. I’d love to hand out candy as well, but I currently leave that to my parents. As the kids get older I’ll involve them more. I also watch a ton of spooky movies, which the kids won’t be involved in anytime soon!

My Husband’s traditions are based more on food that they eat during the holidays. During Christmas and Easter they eat: Sarmale (it’s Romanian style cabbage rolls – absolutely delicious!), Salată de boeuf (my mother-in-law makes it with cut up vegetables and folded into mayonnaise, sounds strange but oh man….so good!) and my personal favourite is Cozonac (it’s such a delicious sweet bread and my mother-in-law makes it from scratch with chocolate and nuts).

His family is Romanian and the tradition of cracking eggs at Easter is in celebration of Jesus Christ’s resurrection. Basically it involves tapping colored hard-boiled eggs together to see who can crack the other’s egg. You pick your egg and one person says, “Cristos a înviat” (“Christ has resurrected”) and the next person responds “Adevarat a înviat” (“indeed, He has resurrected”). The winner is the person whose egg remains unbroken. The unbroken egg represents the person who will live the longest life.

And that’s it!

Sorry the post was so long, but we’re European/Canadians, we like our traditions. Hope you enjoyed!

What is your biggest tradition?

WordPress Prompt – A Main Attraction

Name an attraction or town close to home that you still haven’t got around to visiting.

I don’t often respond to these, but this one intrigued me and got me thinking. I’ve lived 99% of my life in Ontario, Canada. With a short stint in Alberta, but that is not important at the moment. And I’ve seen quite a few well known attractions and idyllic towns here.

However, there is one major attraction I’ve never seen and it’s only two hours away. I’ve seen it in passing while in a car of course, but apparently seeing it in person and peering down from above is a totally different experience.

CN Tower in Toronto.

Now, I know every major city everywhere has some big building, monument, tower, etc; that tends to attract the interest of tourists and even locals. I myself have been avoiding this tower like the plague since I can remember. Why? You may ask. Let me tell you.

I’m deathly afraid of heights and shooting up an elevator to, I believe it’s 124 stories (53 metres or 1,815 feet), is not my idea of a good time. Don’t quote me on the height, it could be taller!

Do you know that people can actually walk around the outside at the very top? Yup! It’s called Edgewalk….no thanks!

Needless to say, I’m not rushing over there to take a peek from high in the sky. I’ve seen it from a plane. But if my kids ever wants to go, I won’t deny them the trip. However, it doesn’t mean I have to like it!

Where haven’t you been?

WordPress Prompt – Natural

Let’s take this one step further and say not just computers, but a cell phone as well. I would live a more solitary life with my family, focusing on being in nature and really living very simply. And to enjoy life and everything around us.

It’s a pretty short and sweet answer, but it’s me.
