Bonus – WordPress Prompt – Let’s Get Physical!

Hums ‘Let’s Get Physical’ by Olivia Newton-John

This question is subjective to each person don’t you think? I mean what I enjoy may not be the preference of my readers.

Now granted, I enjoy a multitude of exercises and it’s really dependent on the time of year.

Summer: I enjoy walking and hiking, being completely engulfed in nature and the sunshine. I have to take advantage of nice weather while we have it, I am in Canada after all. Gym only on rainy days.

Fall: I love the crisp morning walks and this is the time I start to get back in the gym on a more regular basis. I enjoy weight lifting when I go to the gym personally.

Winter: I attempted walks in the winter but honestly, it was hell. Far too cold and too much snow/ice to be walking in. This is when my exercise becomes a strictly indoor activities. Weight lifting and Elliptical are at it’s strongest.

Spring: I’m a bit lazy in the spring, but I’m still in the gym. I take walks when I can, but the weather isn’t consistent.

I’ve never been one for group classes (I usually hide in the back and am not coordinated at all!). I’m not a yoga girl either though I do appreciate the calmness it seems to bring those who practice it. I am not a runner, never have been. And I used to enjoy sports, basketball, softball and volleyball specifically, but these days it’s just for fun with my nephews.

See I’m boring, it’s all walking, weight lifting, and hiking. I just make them fun either being with someone else (usually my husband) or if I’m in the gym I sometimes throw headphones in and listen to music or true crime pod casts.

What do you enjoy? I’d love to know!

Gym Culture

I’ve been meaning to write this post since Sunday, but I was so annoyed that I just couldn’t do it the day it happened. And since Valeria is still asleep, I can collect my thoughts and write this before she gets up.

It’s hard enough to go to a commercial gym when your overweight, it’s even harder after you return or decide to join after having a baby. Especially if you aren’t a regular. But it’s not that, joining a gym is hard, why? Because of the fear of being judged.

Unfortunately, there is this weird culture with commercial gyms and I find it’s even worse at the gym we attend because it’s an extremely low monthly fee. Now, if you are regular gym attendee, you may have seen this culture yourself but this is just my observation. So here it goes…

You generally see these types of people:

  • The New Years Resolutioners – They usually will start in January and will hit the gym hard and by March, you don’t see them any more. They also tend to look a bit lost and don’t know what to do in the gym. I say good for you for making that goal! The first step was getting in there, but don’t burn out, you can do this.
  • Gym Bros – These guys are usually super elitist, will “belittle” friends or acquaintances to make themselves feel better. But their egos are bigger than their muscles most the time. I can’t stand these guys
  • Gym Thots – These girls wear little clothing which demands attention from dudes, do little working out and often stand around with their friends trying to nab a gym guy. Or on the other side of it, they wear little clothing and get annoyed when dudes stare, sometimes calling them out for it. Which in turn, causes men not to want to help them when they get into trouble while working out. There are videos all over the internet regarding this. Girls….you are so much better then this!
  • The Zoomers – This is the younger generation, which like to have one earbud in while they stand around machines or benches, occupying equipment and not actually using it. Often chatting in groups, taking extremely long rests for no reason, on their phones, admiring their muscles in the mirrors or taking pictures. Now granted some actually workout, so kudos to those that do.
  • The Judgers – These people are usually thin or somewhat in shape, but like to go on the treadmill or elliptical and judge with their friend or partner. You can tell they are doing it because they aren’t stealthy at all. We encountered this Sunday.
  • The Regulars – These ladies and gents that are there to workout. If they see you struggling they will spot you, no questions asked or will help you in some way. Will give you a nod or smile if they see you on a regular basis. They usually have a giant water bottle, headphones and will bring things to assist them when working out (weighted belts, gloves, chalk, lifting belt, etc). They are very routined, scheduled, know exactly what they are doing and otherwise keep to themselves. They never judge and are always nice people.
  • The Weight Slammers – These guys and yes, it’s usually guys I have to say, are attention seekers. At least that’s how I see them. They lift or attempt to lift extremely heavy weights, only to slam them down when they finish a rep. They want to catch attention to show they can lift. Unfortunately, it’s loud, annoying and can potentially be unsafe. Often machines get damaged because of these guys. And the fact that people become bothered by the slamming. I really hate the noise.
  • The Muscle Marinaras – It’s what I call them. They are usually on some kind of steroid (trust me you can tell), they only lift free weights and stare at their muscles in the mirror whenever they lift or when they are resting. You also hear them talking about “Look how jacked I am bro!”

I think that’s it, I think I got the key ones here and yes you might be thinking “Well, aren’t you judging?” To a degree, I guess I am, but I’m judged all the time in a place where there should be absolutely no judgment because I’m overweight and trying to get healthy. Also the fact that I’m a girl, lifting weights and sometimes doing lifts that “only guys” do. But I also try to be positive when I’m there, smiling at people who look a bit lost, or another plus size person trying to get healthy. But there are times I put on my “bitch face” and just work out with my husband, trying to go quickly to get back to my daughter. Those are my no nonsense moods.

Now, as my husband mentioned in his post yesterday, he is in training for his fight in April and very focused on his cardio. So, on Sunday he was running on the treadmill on an incline and he does burst sprints. Which means he runs extremely fast for a short period of time, not sure how he does it because I can’t but it’s impressive. I had just finished on the elliptical and was waiting in front of his machine for him to finish. Now on Sunday, he had worked out three times that day, so when we went to the gym he was exhausted and giving it every last bit of what he had, and he was making a bit of noise when he ran. A spanish couple (The Judgers) were on treadmills two down from his. You could tell they were talking about him because they kept looking over and laughing, and the guy even leaned over to see what speed he was running. I shot the girl a very nasty look, twice might I add and she shut up quickly. Her partner just kept laughing. I was about to go over to confront them when my husband finished and we left. I told him what had happened when we were at the car. He was as annoyed as I was.

Gyms are suppose to be judgment free zones, and people like that, well they make it so others get discouraged which than never come back or fear even going to a gym to begin with. It’s so wrong and I hate it! Our society is bad enough as it is outside of that environment, and now you bring it in there? What are you accomplishing making fun of someone else? You have no idea what someone is going through or why they are training; they could be an athlete or this is their stress reliever. But the audacity that they sat there and blatantly judged him, it’s so absurd.

I told my husband eventually when Valeria is a bit older and when I’m in a bit better shape, I want to find a different gym. I’m tired of dealing with this toxic environment and I know you will find it to a degree in all gyms, but the ones you need to pay a bit more, you won’t find it as much. Those people have more of The Regular crowd.

Can we as a gym society stop all this toxic behaviour and actually encourage each other please. That would be fantastic. I’m even going to try to do better.

End of rant.

Step In the Right Direction

I had every intention of doing a movie and television show review, and I will at some point this week, however it’s not going to be right now.

I took, what I think, is another step in the right direction for my weight loss journey. I’ve booked an appointment to see a Holistic Nutritionist. I know what you are probably thinking, “Why?”, well I’m going to tell you.

For years, I’ve been struggling to figure out how to manage and lose weight, all the while having my (now retired) family doctor tell me I’m over-weight. Then would never offer any type of solution or help. Smart right?

Before I got pregnant, my husband was kind enough to help me to improve and work on my weight loss journey. He saw that I was determined and worked with me to find a workout plan that I was comfortable with, and tried to get my eating in check.

But now that I went through a pregnancy and I’m currently postpartum, I feel like this has definitely made a shift in my body and hormones in more ways then one. Yes, I know I just created a little human in my body and things of course changed, but I’m struggling more then before.

That’s why I decided to make the conscious decision to go and see a Holistic Nutritionist. I’m hoping to get some answers and a lot of help to make the necessary dietary changes I need to get my butt rolling. Cause nothing I’m currently doing is working. I want to be healthy, but I’m at a standstill here. I’m also hoping that changing my way of looking at food will hopefully health my eczema as well, which stems from stress and I believe gluten.

Goodness, an Italian with a potential gluten sensitivity, Dio Mio! I love pasta too much to give it up!!

I see her on March 4th, and the assessment is an hour long for the first visit. I opted for in-person, not a video call. I feel like video calls are not as personal and I tend to like zone out to be honest. I’m hoping I mesh well with her, her profile on the clinic website seemed great, so I’m really looking forward to this.

On another positive note, my re-adjusted workout yesterday went well. I put some exercises aside for the time being until my muscles get back to the way they were and muscle soreness lessens when in recovery. Sounds strange, I know; but when you add extra stuff and your too sore the next gym day or on the third day to do those exercises again, it’s rough and discouraging. I just need to build up my strength. I have debated throwing in cardio somewhere, but I have to look at my workout schedule. All in all I’m happy with it at the moment!

I’m going to end it here and maybe start writing up my reviews, maybe. Valeria is having a tough day so I expect an equally rough night. Teething is brutal!

Back to the Gym

This will be a short post, but yesterday my husband and I were able to start going to the gym again.

Trying to figure out a schedule and someone to watch Valeria as we go to the gym was a bit of a struggle. My mom was kind enough to help us out and we planned out a schedule that worked for her. She is doing us a huge favour after all, though she sees it as grandma/granddaughter time. Her office for work is at my nonna’s house (my nonna has dementia), so sometimes she needs to stay late after work. So we made it simple and worry free for her.

Our schedule is:

Monday – 7 PM

Wednesday – 7 PM

Saturday – Sometime in the Afternoon (I’m thinking around 2 or 3 PM

Yesterday I was getting anxiety about going back, like bad anxiety. I was getting worried about how I looked, about being judged, about how much strength I lost, etc. My husband assured me that I would be okay, and if anyone judged or said anything about me, he’d say something. My husband has been going to the gym for years, however it’s been a whole year and a few months for me. I wasn’t able to go during my pregnancy, it was a bit much for me.

We tested my strength, starting with bench press and oof did I lose some strength. I started with the bar which was fine. Then my husband put 5 LB plates on each side, I lifted it but dropped it too quickly, refocusing and recovering myself but making my husband nervous in the process, I was able to lift it three times. We dropped the plates to 2.5 LB on each side and I lift that three times as well. My arms were noodles after that. We went on with the workout: chest flies, ankle strap kickbacks, lateral raises, tricep extension, leg curl and leg extension. I finished and felt okay, a little exhausted but I knew I would feel it today.

And boy did I!

My muscles were sore today, not unbearable but enough to feel them. Picking up Valeria, holding and swaying her made my arms and legs ache. A good ache I have to admit. My muscles need to remember.

I’m looking forward to continuing to go to the gym with my husband, I’ll keep ya posted on how it goes. I have it marked off in my agenda calendar, so I’m determined!

Also, we went for a walk today, which was beautiful. We finally got to see the sun for the first time in a long time, it felt more like an early Spring day then Winter. I hope the weather stays like this, I am so ready for sunny days.

Hope you had a wonderful Tuesday!

What The Heck Is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?!

***Full disclosure: I am not a doctor and please consult a health care professional, this is just my experience and suggestion.***

When I got pregnant with Valeria, I knew that I had some pondering to do with my birth. I have a lower back injury and I didn’t want intervention if we could help it, but that made me consider whether an epidural was viable for me or not. With the risk factors being higher then I would have liked, I opted for no epidural. Now, of course I discussed this with my Midwife and Doula in depth and let them know that if the circumstances arise where the baby or I were at risk, then off to the hospital for necessary treatment/an epidural.

Luckily, I didn’t have to do that and my birth was difficult but naturally done at the Midwife clinic.

Needless to say, I wanted to be well prepared before pushing a child out naturally. My sister-in-law suggested Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy. When she said that, initially I had this confused look on my face like “What the heck is that?”. Then she proceeded to explain what it was and how much it helped her with her births. She highly recommended it and I said “I will definitely look into it!” And I did.

For those who don’t know what this does for a pregnant woman; let me explain it and please if you are interested do further research. But here is what Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy is: A physiotherapist who can help address areas of pelvic and low back pain/pressure, incontinence, and helps to teach you exercises and techniques to help prepare your body for birth. Pregnant women are recommended to begin pelvic floor physiotherapy during the second or third trimester (28-32 weeks).

There are so many benefits to pelvic floor physiotherapy, and for me, I didn’t know just how much pressure and strain that was being put onto my pelvic floor until I started treatment. Between the pressure from the ever growing baby, unconsciously tightening my abdominal/butt muscles for compensation and straining my muscles with daily activity in general (I was a go go go kind of pregnant woman). I didn’t realize I was exhausting everything down below, which in turn caused me some incontinence.

My physiotherapist was wonderful and extremely knowledgeable. On the first visit she explained what she does, she explained with a diorama of the pelvis what is going on when your pregnant, and then did an assessment. Now I opted out of the internal assessment, which is recommended for a better understanding of what’s happening internally, but I really didn’t like being touched much during my pregnancy so….no. She did some assessments, asked numerous questions and then proceeded with a treatment plan. Now, I started my physiotherapy a little later then suggested, but still super beneficial. It helped with my incontinence quite a bit, how to put less strain when getting up out of bed or the couch, and techniques to help prepare my body for birth, helping to loosen my muscles.

The benefits were incredible and I’m so thankful this was suggested to me. Honestly, I wish more women knew about this and I’m hoping it gains more popularity in the future. It’s not just a benefit during pregnancy but postpartum as well. When I was recovering, I remembered certain tips and tricks my physiotherapist taught me for postpartum and to help with my pain, etc.

I heard in certain parts of Europe, specifically France, that this is seen as part of your postpartum recovery. The government has funded rehabilitation for women who give birth; they get to “re-train” their pelvic floors with 10 free physical therapy sessions. How wonderful and brilliant! Ours is part of private health care here in Canada.

If you are from Europe or other parts of the world, is this funded by the government or part of private health care?

Now you are probably wondering the point here huh?

Well today I had my postpartum follow-up. Generally you see your physiotherapist six weeks after birth, but I wasn’t able to. One, she had no availability and two, we were sick in December. So today was my big day and it was great. She assessed my abdomen, flexibility, etc.; I got the green light to get back in the gym (YES!), some new stretches and exercises to help with my core strengthening and for relaxation, and a nice chat on things to lookout for which may be cause for concern. Otherwise, she says my recovery has been amazing from what she could tell. She also wished more women would take the time to actually recover after birth, I wholeheartedly agreed. Even though it’s extremely difficult to do so.

My recommendation: If you are able, please take care of your pelvic floor before and after birth, it is so important for you to get back to normal. And let’s be honest, no mama wants to pee herself when she laughs, especially after birth! Also, pelvic floor physiotherapy isn’t just for pregnancy or just for women, men can go too! So, if you feel something is going on down below, please check it out because it may just help.

Plus Size Mama and Her Weight Loss Journey

Let’s start this post with a bit about my day. It was boring! My daughter woke up very happy and cuddled up right against me. We snuggled in bed for a bit before my husband joined us for 10 minutes, it was a nice family moment for a Monday morning. The rest of the day was fairly quiet. Play time, nap struggles, prepping some hard boiled eggs and bacon so they are on hand, saving the bacon grease (Liquid Gold!), a nice long walk and dinner made. Prepped some spicy taco seasoned ground beef for quick meals for hubby as well.

As you can tell, we are trying to make meals a bit healthier and easier. Especially for myself; since I’m on a bit of a health journey again. So, let me get real with all of you.

Before I got pregnant, I was on a weight loss journey. My initial motivation was to look good in a bikini and not feel ashamed of my body any more. It had only been about four or five months before I found out I was pregnant. Throughout my pregnancy I ate healthy, putting on about 10lbs and having my beautiful healthy baby girl. Despite certain doctors looking down on me for being plus size and pregnant. Though, I was constantly told by my family physician I needed to lose weight, without offering me suggestions or help. Anyway, sorry about the bit of a rant, but back to the topic at hand.

My motivation has since changed and I’d like to be able to run around with my kids and not be out of breath. I want to live a long healthy life and set a good example. If I’m eating crap and my kids are eating healthy, what kind of message does that send?

Not to mention, as your pregnant your body changes, you gain weight and yes, thankfully you lose some weight once the baby comes out. BUT…I was stressed with breastfeeding and gained some weight back from it. Stress does terrible things to your body.

I’ve taken matters into my own hands: downloaded a calorie counting app, did some grocery shopping, increased my water intake and trying to be a little more physically active every day. Baby girl definitely helps me with that. I have decided to do more than one walk in a day and hopefully soon I can get back into the gym to lift weights again. That literally made me so happy to have that hour and a half of just focusing on weight lifting, taking care of myself, relieving some stress and spending time with my husband. To see the changes in my body, both physically and mentally, was impressive. Needless to say, I can not wait to get back in the gym.

I’ve learned that a good support system and consistency is key to changing your life. Also, don’t let anyone discourage you from changing your life for the better. Just because you are plus size, people presume that you are unhealthy, lazy and so many other negatives. You are beautiful (at any size!), strong and can do anything you set your mind to.

Prove them wrong! Find your why and stick to it. And you can accomplish anything. And please don’t think you need to start it as a new year’s resolution, you can start any time and not just in January.

To be honest, most people who start resolutions, especially those who start extremely restrictive diets and exercise regimes, tend to fail and quit shortly after starting. My advice, find what works for you because everyone is different. What works for Nancy down the street, might not work for you. I know I can’t give up my pasta and breads, so calorie counting works for me. And find an exercise you enjoy, don’t just go to the gym and have no plan. Plan out your workouts, for the week, it makes life so much easier! Last but certainly not least; a buddy system helps as well, not only for accountability, but support when you need it most.

  1. Weight – 247.4 lbs, my starting weight at pregnancy was 240 lbs
  2. Calorie intake per day – 1,771
  3. Exercise – approximately 5000-6000 steps a day, 1 walk with baby girl
  4. Diet – Lots of lean protein, veggies, fruits, nuts and little bit of carbs
  5. Measurements – Haven’t done them yet…woops!
  6. Progress photos – Haven’t done those yet either…eek!
  7. Water intake – about 10 glasses a day
  8. Sleep – What is that?! I get what I can, when I can. Baby girl dictates my sleep some nights…and some days as well as a matter of fact…
  9. Number of days into my journey – Two
