Languages..

I’m sitting here late at night wondering what I’m still doing awake. Insomnia has hit me hard lately and I’ve been working through some health stuff.

This won’t be a depressing or woe is me type of post I promise!

I’ve recently started to think about what I want to teach Valeria as she grows up. In my last post I stated I was going to start creating books so she can learn all three languages: Italian, Romanian and English. That is still the plan, but as I was working on an idea last night, I came across something I never knew. In hindsight, I probably should have, but I will get to that in a moment.

I didn’t know that the Italian alphabet only contains 21 letters. So the letters J, K, W, X and Y aren’t used and if words contain those letters, then they are borrowed from a foreign language. Wild right?!

Now, let me get to the part as to why I didn’t know that. When I was a child, Nonna Santa (my mother’s mom) lived with us and she spoke to us in Italian pretty much always. With the occasional Italian/English mixed word, example: Backyarda….Not an actual word by the way. But you grew to understand. I could understand her and other Italians really well, still do to this day.

But, when I was young my mother put me in Italian school on Saturdays, the problem was I was struggling in English at school (later found out I had a learning disability – Dyslexia). My mother pulled me from Italian school (weirdly I flourished there) and had me focus on English.

I don’t disagree that my mother made the right choice. I mean we live in Canada, which is an English speaking country. It made sense for me, as a child with a learning disability, to focus on that as my primary language.

My one regret is that I didn’t decide to go back to Italian lessons as I was older. Now, I’m itching to learn! In a way this is good for both me and Valeria, we can kind of learn together. I am trying to learn Romanian, though that is a struggle. My tongue doesn’t move certain ways in which the words need to be pronounced. My husband corrects me when I try though. I can roll my tongue for R sounds all day long, but my goodness my tongue does not want to move for Romanian words!

I might find a class or something to begin learning Italian since I’m too scared to speaking the little that I know, well not scared but embarrassed. I don’t want to sound foolish or say something incorrectly. I also want to be able to read and write it comfortably. One day, I’d like to visit Italy and I want to be the fluent speaker out of our little family.

My husband has Romanian on lock, now it’s my turn.

Needless to say, I’m trying to figure out how to approach these books now. Do I want to do one for food? Do I want to do one for people? Animals? Simple phrases? Et cetera. I might jot down some ideas tomorrow.

If you have any suggestions let me know in the comments below!

Ciao!!

Saturday Family Fun

Today we travelled to see Nonna A, my dad’s mother, and my cousin and her husband. It was the first time my cousin and her husband were going to meet Valeria. We had asked them to be Valeria’s Godparents, so baptism to come in the very near future.

My husband got up early for a personal training session for Muay Thai with a friend of his at the gym, he has an amateur fight coming up in April. He’s getting all the training in that he can before it happens. I stayed with baby and got her things ready for the day: Bottles, onesies, diapers, burp cloth, toys, etc. She slept until about 8:15 AM, so it wasn’t too bad. I showered as she played with her mat (Thank goodness for play mats!), it was a quick one. My husband came home, showered and got ready for the day. We had a long day ahead of us, including a two hour drive to and from. Four hours of driving in total; I felt bad for my husband having to drive all that, thankfully he doesn’t mind.

We left a bit later than anticipated, but my parents were going as well, so they let my nonna know. Unfortunately, we had to take separate cars, car seats take up room. The drive wasn’t bad though, we took our time and no traffic jams, which was great. We have a toll highway, the 407, which we were able to take part way. That thing is heavenly and not many people are on it because of the toll. It was smooth sailing and we got there in exactly two hours.

We went up to her apartment, Valeria had just woken up a second time from her mini car naps, and was wide awake when they opened the door. Well, they were super excited to see; congratulating us and telling us how cute she is. My parents showed up shortly after we did.

Lunch was absolutely deeeeelicious as usual, Nonna A is the best cook. We had fettuccine with homemade sauce, along with the meat that was in the sauce and that was just to start. Then the second course consisted of chicken cutlets, peas and mushrooms sauteed, zucchini fritters and salad. We’re Italian, we love to eat! My husband and I got the left-overs, no one wanted them so nonna decided for us. Espresso, fruit and nonna’s famous pistachio cake was served as dessert.

We sat around talking and laughing all day, I took some photos for memories. It was really nice and I really needed that as a recharge. I’m always so happy after I spend time with my close family. The day passed too quickly sadly and it was 8 PM before we knew it.

We left at that point, Valeria was getting tired and a little cranky so we knew it was time to go. She passed out immediately in the car. Unfortunately, she woke up wailing like a banshee halfway through the drive and we had to make a pit stop. Once she calmed down and settled back in her seat, we were back on the highway, making it home by 10:20 PM. Now….she doesn’t want to sleep, she is so excited to be out of the car and home.

The day was wonderful, we got to spend a lot of quality time with my nonna, cousin and her husband. I wouldn’t have missed this for the world. I can’t wait to see them again in a few weeks for Easter. My cousin and I are very close (born on the same day, just different years!) and we are trying to make more of an effort to see each other more. Plus our husbands get along so well, so they bro it up whenever they are together. Joking and laughing the whole time. We are also making more of an effort to see my nonna as well.

Family is important and my everything, I am Italian after all!

Staycation All I Ever Wanted!

Hums “Vacation” by the Go-Go’s…

Before I begin with our plans for our “staycation”, I have to inform you that I will no longer be reading It Rides A Pale Horse by Andy Marino. It is way too slow for my liking and I thought it would pick up, but I was nearly halfway through and I just couldn’t go on. I am taking a page out of Cheila’s blog (https://pinkfordays.wordpress.com/) and not continue on with books that don’t interest me. Maybe I’ll try again at a later date but for now, NOPE!

Okay, onward!

I’ve been having a bit of a hard time, so my husband was kind enough to surprise me with some vacation time, which I am so thrilled about! I’m not a huge planner, but I like to have a rough idea of what we will be doing, so of course that’s what I did. With his input as well.

Sunday (Tomorrow) – Morning gym session. Then we are getting together with my family, it’s the Super Bowl (American Football for those who don’t know and meh to me). I don’t really care for the game, mainly because I don’t understand a lick of it to be fair. But I get to spend some time with my parents, brothers, my nonna Santa (my grandmother with Dementia), and hopefully my nephews and sister-in-law. We are doing a pot luck, so I was preparing some things for that tonight: Tuna Salad, Chicken Salad, Cheeseball, Veggie tray, etc. I’ll try to take a picture of the spread tomorrow!

Monday – The gym at night, especially after all that fatty food from Sunday, I will need it! But I think I’m going to tackle the pantry and maybe tidy up my desk while Valeria sleeps and my husband is going to do a deep clean of the bathroom (Yay!). Otherwise our Monday is going to be a pretty quiet one. Take Valeria for a walk, it’s suppose to be nice weather this week, so want to get as much sunshine as possible!

Tuesday – We have a Pioneer Village just on the edge of town and they are offering “Winter Walks”. The homes are not currently open, but we can walk the grounds and my husband has never been, so I thought that would be fun for all three of us to go to.

Wednesday – Valeria is 4 months old! And I guess it’s Valentine’s Day (Blah). I’ll be taking some 4 month pictures, though I’m still not sure what I’m going to do for them, I usually have a plan each month but this one stumped me. But if you have any suggestions for a photo concept for my baby girl, I’d be grateful!

I’m not a fan of Valentine’s Day personally, I love my husband everyday and try to do little things to make him feel special. Maybe I’m just a cynic, I’ve never really been a fan. But if you do enjoy the holiday, what special plans do you have?

Oh and the gym at night, gotta keep to my schedule! And hey maybe the gym won’t be as busy due to Valentine’s Day.

Thursday – We are heading to the Butterfly Conservatory! We will also be heading to Hamilton again to visit my Mother-in-law. It’s a long weekend here, so it’s perfect for us to spend a little time with her as well.

Friday – We are heading to a waterfall in Hamilton, apparently there are lots. I had no idea, so I told him to pick one. This one is all him! I hope Valeria enjoys the hike and the falls, well daddy carrying her in the carrier anyway! Fingers crossed.

He also wants to go to this Italian bakery/market that he saw on Instagram, so we will be taking a trip out there as well. Not going to lie, I checked out their page and it was mouth watering, so I’m a little excited about it. Good Italian bakeries are hard to find these days here.

Saturday – We are going to visit my Nonna (my dad’s mother), she hasn’t seen the baby yet. We thought since we will be close by, we would take her over for a few hours to meet her. I can’t wait to see a five foot tiny Italian lady holding our 15 lb baby. It makes me smile and giggle to myself thinking about it. I know she will love her though, she always asks about Valeria whenever we speak. She will probably invite my Godparents over as well, they haven’t seen her yet either.

Sunday – I get to see my cousin Antoinette, who I haven’t seen in….let me think, probably almost 15 or 20 years. I know! Trust me, we both realize now how stupid it’s been not having grown up together since we were thick as thieves as little girls. Family drama kept us apart for a long time, then this past year we reconnected and well….we’ve been talking literally every day. She is so excited to meet Valeria, I know she is going to spoil her rotten and honestly I’m thrilled to have her be a part of our daughter’s life. She has a goth mama, why not a goth auntie?! It will be a wonderful day, I’m so looking forward to it!

Monday – Depending on how Sunday goes, we might be coming home Monday morning. Monday will be a total rest day once we get home and getting Valeria back into her regular routine at home.

Now looking at our week, it’s really busy! Who knows, this is the plan right now, but things could totally change. This is why I like to have a rough idea of what we’re doing.

Do you have any exciting plans for the week? Any activities you will be doing with your kids or partner?

I’m going to call it here for the evening, but I hope you have a wonderful day or evening wherever you are in the world!

Ciao!!
